Stanisław, polnischer Schriftsteller, * Lemberg 12. 9. 1921; Arzt; einer der bekanntesten Sciencefictionautoren der Gegenwart; verbindet in seiner Prosa wissenschaftlich fundierte und künstlerisch sehr variable Darstellung einer utopischen Zukunft mit überzeitlicher philosophischer und moralischer Problematik der menschlichen Existenz. Die anfängliche Faszination ist inzwischen einer kritischen und pessimistischen Einstellung gegenüber den Möglichkeiten des technischen Fortschritts gewichen. Den Grenzen des Wachstums sind zahlreiche publizistische und wissenschaftliche Schriften gewidmet. Lem verfasste auch Hör- und Fernsehspiele; einige Romane sind verfilmt worden (u. a. von A. Tarkowskij, »Solaris«). 1985 erhielt er den Österreichischen Staatspreis für europäische Literatur.
